THE FUSE IS GETTING SHORTER
by Michael Dare

I love you yes I love you and you know damn well it’s true
And if you don’t believe me I will beat you black and blue
I see you with your family
I do not feel a part
You tell me we are finished
That isn’t really smart

I want to start all over but relationships are hairy
And Paula Barbieri?
Well I just can’t afford her
The fuse is getting shorter
The fuse is getting shorter

I love you yes I love you and I will forever more
and if you don’t believe me I will boot you out the door
I’m coming to conclusions
that I don’t really want
There’s only one escape
from all those memories that haunt

I only want to call you but my fingers feel like play dough
I gave my change to Kato
Say, can I bum a quarter?
The fuse is getting shorter
The fuse is getting shorter

I love you yes I love you  and I will until the end
and if you don’t believe me you will need some time to mend
I’m gonna pay a visit
to your condo by the sea
I’m gonna introduce you to
the real real me

I’m stronger than a bison but I don’t want to brag
The knife is in the bag
I’m starting to walk toward her
The fuse is getting shorter
The fuse is getting shorter

I love you yes I love you but I gotta change my clothes
My schedule is off cause an emergency arose
I’m gonna pay a visit
to Chicago , that’s no lie
I’m gonna have to come up with
a perfect alibi

I try to play it straight but someone always stacks the decks
Arrive at LAX
Give my golf clubs to the porter
The fuse is getting shorter
The fuse is getting shorter

I love you yes I love you though I cannot tell you why
And now I start to wonder just who was that other guy?
Did he deserve a funeral?
Did you leave me for him?
I really didn’t have a choice
Just blame it on a whim

I’m in the back seat crying on the freeway headed south
The gun is in my mouth
I’m headed to the border
The fuse is getting shorter
The fuse is getting shorter
